" In the summer of 2023, I met a backyard bun that I couldn't put down (Hamish), quickly immersing myself in the complex world of lagomorphs and the copious amounts of misinformation surrounding them. By the fall, I was signed up as a volunteer foster with two wonderful rescue groups, caring for two bunnies both saved from euthanasia.
Eager to support the rescues further, I began purchasing carriers and other supplies to donate. While purchasing carriers from a local classified add, the woman repeatedly invited me to her backyard, encouraging me to take home free bunnies. What I found there was heartbreaking: a yard filled with 2x2 wire cages exposed to the elements, with no food, water, or shelter. Overwhelmed with emotion, I began to sob, startling her as I explained why this was unacceptable. I felt a deep urge to educate her about the emotional and intelligent nature of rabbits, and the many bunnies who are homeless, tossed onto the streets, and euthanized every day due to overbreeding. She insisted her care was adequate, claiming that “lots of people do it,” and swore she would stop breeding. I returned numerous times, bringing her horse pellets, informative packets, and guidance on a proper diet, even working in her yard for hours to process juju berries; unfortunately, her commitment did not last, and she continues to breed.
That night, I left with two bunny brothers tucked into my coat, their fur filthy and stool-covered, carrying the scent of neglect bordering on abuse. They both buried their faces into my coat, clearly appreciative of the warmth and safety. This experience ignited my passion for rabbit rescue and advocacy. I realized I couldn’t just stand by; I needed to take a more active role in educating others, collaborating with rescue organizations, and combating misinformation. Thus began my journey into the world of rescue, where I strive to provide a safe and loving environment for rabbits in need, advocate for their well-being, and assist their owners. "
