In 2023, on my birthday, I found a rabbit under a bench in the backyard of my old childhood home.
She had been abandoned. She was suffering from severe fly strike and had a broken back. She couldn’t move properly. She was weak, covered in wounds, and alone. If I hadn’t found her when I did, she would not have survived.
That rabbit is Tofu.
At the time, I wasn’t involved in rabbit welfare. And I wasn’t planning to start. I was just someone who couldn’t walk away from an animal in pain. I took her home because she needed help — and somewhere in the process of saving her, she saved me too. Caring for Tofu changed the direction of my life. I learned how common rabbit abandonment is. I saw how often they are misunderstood, neglected, and left behind. I realized how invisible their suffering can be.
Tofu became my purpose. She is the reason I stepped into rabbit welfare. She is the reason I began advocating. She is the reason Tofu Pico Bunny exists. This was built from one moment — one abandoned rabbit under a bench — and the belief that no animal should suffer unseen.
Tofu’s story is where this began.
And because of her, I hope that many more will get a second chance.
